Monumental bird count
Despite frigid temperatures, bird watchers showed up on Saturday, Feb. 13, to participate in the first backyard bird count at DeSoto National Monument in northwest Bradenton. Count totals were sent to the National Audubon Society. This will become an annual event, according to park officials.
Nancy and Mike Barnes, of Michigan and Ruskin, get instructions from National Park Service employee Heather Hill inside one of the Native American huts in the park.
